Our adventure began before sunrise in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. After a shuttle transfer to the Hito Cajón border crossing, we completed immigration formalities and entered our 62nd country—Bolivia. Canadian passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 90 days, while Indian passport holders can obtain an eVisa or Visa on Arrival. The process was surprisingly smooth and straightforward.

Shortly after entering Bolivia, we arrived at Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde, two stunning high-altitude lakes sitting beneath the majestic Licancabur Volcano. Laguna Blanca gets its pale color from minerals and borax deposits, while Laguna Verde shines with an emerald-green hue thanks to sulfur-rich waters.

🎨 Salvador Dalí Desert

As we continued deeper into Bolivia, the landscape became increasingly surreal. The Salvador Dalí Desert is named after the famous Spanish painter because the colorful mountains and giant rock formations resemble a surrealist painting. It felt like we had landed on another planet.

♨️ Termas de Polques

One of the highlights of Day 1 was soaking in the natural hot springs of Termas de Polques. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and flamingo-filled lagoons, it was hard to imagine a better place to relax. Entry costs 15 Bolivianos, and towels can be rented on-site.

🌋 Sol de Mañana

At nearly 4,900 meters above sea level, Sol de Mañana was the highest point of our trip. Bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers, and the smell of sulfur surrounded us. The altitude was intense, but seeing active geothermal fields in such a remote location was unforgettable.

🦩 Laguna Colorada

The final stop of Day 1 was Laguna Colorada, a spectacular red-colored lake home to thousands of flamingos. Watching flamingos feeding against a backdrop of red water and Andean mountains was one of the most beautiful wildlife experiences we've ever had.

🏠 Budget Hostel Experience

Our first night's accommodation was basic. Temperatures dropped well below freezing, hot water was limited, and comfort was minimal. However, this is all part of the authentic Uyuni experience, especially when choosing the budget tour option.

🪨 Day 2: Rock Formations & Wildlife

Day 2 introduced us to bizarre rock formations carved by thousands of years of wind erosion. We visited the famous World Cup Rock, camel-shaped formations, and the Lost Italy area. Along the way we encountered llamas, vicuñas, flamingos, and even Andean ostriches.

🐍 Cañón de la Anaconda

One of the most dramatic viewpoints was the Anaconda Canyon. The winding river below resembles a giant snake, giving the canyon its name. The sweeping views and silence of the Altiplano made this one of our favorite stops.

🏚 Abandoned Mining Village

Before reaching the salt flats, we visited an abandoned settlement that once supported Bolivia's mining industry. Empty buildings and deserted streets gave the village an eerie atmosphere and a glimpse into the region's past.

🧂 Salt Hotel & Uyuni Mirror Effect

Our second night was spent in a genuine salt hotel where even the walls and furniture were made from salt blocks. Before sunset, we were lucky enough to witness the famous Uyuni mirror effect, where a thin layer of water transforms the salt flat into a giant natural mirror reflecting the sky.

🌅 Day 3: Salar de Uyuni

Sunrise over Salar de Uyuni was one of the most magical moments of our travels. Covering more than 10,000 square kilometers, it is the largest salt flat in the world. We explored Incahuasi Island, climbed among giant cacti, captured perspective photos, and drove across endless white landscapes.

🚂 Train Cemetery

Before finishing the tour, we stopped at the famous Train Cemetery near Uyuni. Rusting locomotives from Bolivia's mining boom now stand abandoned in the desert, creating one of the country's most iconic photography locations.

🚌 Uyuni to La Paz by Bus

After the tour, we boarded an overnight Todo Turismo bus to La Paz. The seats nearly reclined flat, blankets were provided, and the service was excellent. It turned out to be one of the best long-distance bus journeys we have experienced in South America.

🏙 Arrival in La Paz

On Day 4, we arrived in La Paz, the highest capital city in the world. Exhausted but amazed, we reflected on what had been one of the most challenging and rewarding adventures of our travels.
