Bali Hibernation Diaries: Canggu, Seminyak & Cozy Villas
Sometimes travel isn’t about constant exploring—it’s about slowing down. In Bali, we spent days hibernating in a jungle villa, recovering, eating fresh tropical food, and soaking in the Canggu surf vibes. From cozy $36/night stays to sunset beaches, yoga hubs, and scooter adventures, here’s a peek into our laid-back Bali days.
🌿 Our Jungle Villa Escape
We stayed in a peaceful garden villa in Canggu—a hidden jungle retreat with mango trees, open-air bathrooms, and plenty of mosquito friends 🦟 (carry repellant!). For just $36 a night, we had a spacious king-size bed, a private garden, and sustainable amenities with zero single-use plastics. Most of our time? Eating breakfast on the patio, lounging on the couch, and battling ants for mangoes.
🏄 Canggu: Surf, Cafes & Sunset Vibes
Canggu has transformed from a sleepy surf town into a bustling hub of beach clubs, cafés, boutique shops, and tattoo parlors. The waves here average 8–9 feet—perfect for surfers, but still fun to watch if you’re just sipping a coconut. While we skipped the famous beach clubs this time, we loved the coastal walks, boutique cafés, and those magical sunsets on black sand beaches.
🚲 Scooters, Surf Schools & Staying Cheap
Renting a scooter is the easiest way to get around. We paid 250,000 IDR (~$16) for 3 days for an older bike—no deposits, no passport held, and no stress about scratches. Canggu is also packed with surf schools offering lessons for all levels. If you plan to stay long-term, monthly rentals for rooms can be as low as $20–30 per night. Most cafés and restaurants accept credit cards, but keep some cash handy for bikes and street food.
🍕 Eating in Canggu & Seminyak
Food in Bali is a treat. From smoothie bowls to wood-fired pizzas, we tried it all. Hawker-style roasted corn for just 20,000 IDR ($1.30) was our sunset snack of choice. In Seminyak, we grabbed dinner with live music and people-watching vibes. Beach clubs often have a minimum spend (around 200,000 IDR per person), but we happily watched sunsets for free from the sand.
🏨 Fun Stay in Seminyak
After Canggu, we moved to Yello Hotels & Resorts in Seminyak—a funky, colorful stay with quirky art, refillable water stations, and comfy king beds. Rooms usually cost $61 CAD per night, but thanks to our travel credit, our two-night stay was free! Seminyak felt busier than Canggu, with shopping streets, tattoo studios, and endless spas. A one-hour foot massage? Just 100,000 IDR ($6.50).
✨ Travel Tips
- Stay in Canggu if you love surfing, yoga, or café hopping.
- Rent older scooters—they’re cheaper and less hassle on return.
- Beach sunsets are free—skip pricey club minimum spends.
- Massages in Seminyak are affordable; try one before you leave.
- Carry mosquito repellent everywhere—Bali’s unofficial currency 😉.
Bali can be whatever you want it to be: a party capital, a surf hub, or a hibernation heaven. For us, it was slow mornings, cheap eats, scooter rides, and sunsets that melted into the horizon.
