Thanks to a new highway, the journey from Hanoi that usually takes 4 hours now takes around 2½—and coffee breaks ("Happy Rooms" in Vietnamese) are included! A quick stop at a pearl museum unveiled how oysters become pearls—and yes, you can buy them too, beginning at around 320,000 VND (~$14 USD).

Boarding & The Legend of the “Descending Dragon”

After a short stop at the harbor, we boarded our four-star luxury cruise. On the deck, our guide shared the legend of Halong Bay—named the "Bay of the Descending Dragon." According to lore, a dragon descended to Earth, dropped pearls, and created the surreal mountains and hidden caves we now cruise through, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Welcome Drinks & Onboard Dining

Upon boarding, the crew greeted us with welcome drinks. Lunch was served buffet-style, with an array of dishes—fruit, local specialties, and surprisingly tasty spreads. It was intensely hot (about 40 °C with >75% humidity), making cold drinks and shaded seating essential.

Activities & Excursions

The cruise included multiple activities. We joined a bamboo boat ride (not actually bamboo-built) and learned about the kayaking options—though the heat made us think twice. Caves awaited: cool, shaded, with dripping water—a refreshing contrast to the blazing day outside. These karst formations are extraordinary, forming over millions of years with unique stalactites and pools that create a surreal, natural art gallery.

Ti Top Island & Swimming Break

We docked at Ti Top Island—a tiny but popular beach. Despite the crowd, we took a quick swim in a designated safe zone before continuing to explore lesser-known sights.

Final Reflections

Our cruise ship—shiny and new—felt like the biggest and brightest in the bay. Despite the crowds, the grandeur of Halong Bay is undeniable. If it’s your first cruise, especially during the hot season, it’s worth it—just bring your camera, your thirst for epic scenery, and maybe some antiperspirant. If you time your trip for cooler weather, it’ll be even better.

✨ Travel Tips

Book your cruise via your hotel or local center—compare prices both morning and evening to snag better deals.

Bring swimwear for Ti Top Island but opt for shaded areas to avoid the midday heat.

Caves are a cool escape—make sure you explore at least one to beat the humidity outside.

If kayaking, go early before temperatures peak or opt for a bamboo boat ride if you're feeling less bold.

Weather matters!
