From trying unique treats to walking up steep hills with amazing views, Kyoto’s charm is undeniable!

Trying Local Snacks & Convenience Store Finds

Just opposite our hotel, we discovered a 7-Eleven with an amazing variety of snacks—spicy potato chips, rice cakes with chicken mayo, black pepper treats, and more. Everything looked delicious, so we ended up picking a few items to try while settling in at the hotel.

Kiyomizu-dera: Temple of Pure Water

Our first major stop was Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto’s iconic Buddhist temple known for its stunning wooden stage and panoramic city views. Walking up the steep, slanted streets filled with tourists and local charm was an experience in itself. The temple, over 1200 years old, is part of UNESCO World Heritage and is famous for its medicinal spring water.

Lunch & Local Eats

After exploring, we enjoyed a local meal featuring sweet soy sauce rice dumplings, pancakes with maple syrup, and soft, refreshing ice creams like matcha and vanilla. Japanese sweets are so meticulously crafted that each bite feels like art!

Exploring Gion District & Traditional Streets

We wandered through the historic Gion district, known for its traditional houses, shops, and occasional sighting of people in kimonos. The architecture, symmetry, and overall aesthetic make it feel like walking through a living art gallery.

Visiting Shrines & Public Spaces

At Sato Shrine, lanterns lit up the paths beautifully. Temples in Japan are not just spiritual spots—they blend art, history, and language. The public areas and washrooms in Japan were impeccably maintained, showing a level of cleanliness and care that’s unique.

Sunset by the Kamo River

To end the day, we relaxed by the Kamo River with cafes and restaurants overlooking the water. Watching the sunset during the golden hour was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of walking, sightseeing, and tasting local delicacies.

✨ Travel Tips

Bring comfortable shoes—Kyoto streets and hills are steep and require lots of walking.

Try local snacks at convenience stores—they often offer unique flavors you won’t find anywhere else.

Respect photography rules at shrines and temples, especially inside sacred areas.

Thanks for following our Kyoto adventure 🙌 Don’t forget to subscribe to FollowTheImprints so you don’t miss the next journey!

Day 1 in Kyoto: Temples, Streets & Local Flavors June 2024 | Japan Travel Our first full day in Kyoto was a mix of historic temples, local snacks, and exploring authentic Japanese streets.
